Security Council, Syrian rebels meet, discuss "desperate" situation
The United Nations Security Council met Friday with Syrian rebels, who asked the UN to help pressure the Syrian government to attend peace talks that result in the exit of President Bashar Assad from power. "Far more international pressure [is needed] to force the Assad regime to accept a political transition," said Ahmed al-Jarba of the Syrian National Coalition to Security Council members. UN, Syria agree on "way forward" for chemical-weapons investigation
Discussions between the United Nations chemical-weapons expert Ake Sellstrom and the UN high representative for disarmament Angela Kane and Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem "were thorough and productive and led to an agreement on the way forward," a joint statement said.
